Breathe

There is a kind of tiredness that sleep doesn’t fix.

You wake up late because you were working until the night disappeared.

You skip breakfast because there’s a meeting.

Lunch becomes tea.

The curtains stay closed.

The room stays dark except for the light from your screen.

You answer one notification, then another.

Between two calls, you scroll for a few minutes.

Then back to work.

The walk you wanted to take gets skipped.

Dinner happens when the rest of the world is asleep.

And somehow, this becomes normal.

You keep telling yourself there is just a little more to do.

One more project.

One more deadline.

One more milestone.

A little more money.

A little more freedom.

A little more success.

And then, maybe, you’ll breathe.

But I wonder if that moment ever really comes.

Because when you reach the thing you were chasing, there is usually another thing waiting.

Another goal.

Another number.

Another version of yourself you think you need to become.

The finish line keeps moving.

And somewhere along the way, you stop noticing what is happening around you.

The sunlight coming through the window.

The plants you haven’t looked at in days.

A meal eaten slowly.

A conversation with someone you love.

A song you used to play all the time.

The painting you once wanted to finish.

The place you wanted to travel to.

The silence you haven’t heard in a while.

Nothing dramatic happens.

You don’t suddenly lose your life.

You just slowly stop living it.

And maybe that’s the part that scares me the most.

Not that we work too much.

But that we can become so occupied with building a life that we forget to actually live the one we already have.

I am not saying you shouldn’t want more.

Want the money.

Build the business.

Take the promotion.

Make the thing you’ve been dreaming about.

Be ambitious.

Just don’t make your entire life wait for it.

Because you can want more without becoming lifeless while you get there.

So, breathe.

Literally.

Step outside.

Feel the sunlight.

Take a slow walk.

Eat something you enjoy.

Sit beside a tree.

Watch the sky change.

Go somewhere without your phone.

Let your mind be quiet for a while.

Not because you will come back more productive.

Not because it will help you achieve your next goal.

Just because you are alive.

And you are allowed to live before you have figured everything out.

Breathe.
